I take a lot of dog training classes, do dogsports, and pride myself on being kind to my dogs.
Because I have seen so many people use e-collars aggressively at very high levels of stimulation on confused dogs who did not know what was expected, I had a very negative opinion about e-collars. There was zero chance that I would use an e-collar on my dogs that way.
However, I attended Derrick's e-collar seminar and saw how he used the e-collar to provide extremely subtle communication between dog and owner. (He used level 2 or 4 of a maximum 100 to encourage the dog to perform a behaviour that the dog already had been trained on and understood. Think feather touch, rather than electricity bolt. Think polishing behaviours, rather than hammering confusion.) Derrick also explained that using an aggressive high-stimulation training method was unfair and unethical to dogs. (However, he also said that when there is a chance of self-harm, there is a place to use aversive tools - ie. a dog who chases cars, or attacks rattle snakes.)
As I continuously learning more and more about dog training and behaviour, I am very glad that I attended Derrick's seminar.
